According to the UK Independence Party website UKIP will try to achieve the following if they gain power at the 2010 general election: The Royal Navy is now under strength, despite manning standards being reduced on board ships. There are particular shortages in medical staff, weapons systems operators, leading hands (21% short), nuclear watch keepers, […]

I agree with the comments you have made as regards to the future structure of the royal navy we are an island nation a permanent member of the security council and have important overseas obligations and we require a strong and flexible force
short term gains cuts to the fleet could cost the uk dear in the near future and has the nation worried
policies like these from ukip are definate vote winners and I would suggest that an at least comment was put before these numbers and with the advanced technologies of AIP submarines these should also play a part in the structure of the navy as they are cheaper to operate so greater numbers to be purchased

Very concise and well thought out.
It is essential that in an era of high deficits and competing interests we have a clear plan for securing hardward for the Navy. UKIP seems the only the party that offers this.
We are increasingly seeing a swing towards a more assertive if not aggressive nationalism in many nations, especially in the Middle East and in Europe. It is essential we have an effective Navy that can offer more than coastal patrols or a Trident platform. A multirole Navy is needed more now than perhaps at any time post Suez.
Royal Navy
Apart from the fact that this is sadly going to remain a dream anyway, there still a few things which are very evidently wrong and that is worth pointing out:
6 RFA landing ships, but with no Ro/Ro capability. Why, in the name of all that is holy??? Helicopters aren’t magical. They can’t bring ashore the heavy vehicles essential for the troops.
6 Bay class LSD, eventually fitted with an hangar for a couple of helicopters, are a far better element to have.
It is worth remembering that initially, 6 and then 5 Bays had to be built, in fact.
3 RFA Tankers. Seriously??? A fleet twice as big as the current one, with half the number of logistic vessels? Someone there does not understand the value of logistic support and does not appreciate how useless combat elements quickly become if they are not supported and given fuel and ammunition and food and all the other supplies.
And 25 minesweepers? No, thanks, but that’s overkill. If there is something European countries can provide in spades within NATO is modern, efficient minesweepers and good experience in MCM. Even the smaller countries can bring to the table very good crews and modern minesweepers.
Also, the third carrier.
Awesome as it would be, it realistically is overkill.
Better to spend that money in other ways. For example, fitting folding rotors to the Chinook helicopters and give them some protection from corrosion in sea environment to make it easier to embark them for amphibious operations, since they are invaluable heavy lifters.
