The Labour Party won the 2005 UK general election with 35.3% of the popular British vote. The Conservative Party was just a few points behind with points behind at 32.3% of the popular vote, but because of the first past the post voting system, the Labour Party had a significant majority with 356 parliamentary seats […]

I was listening to Gordon Brown recently and the last two speeches he’s given, one to the citizens thing and the other a press type conference and I wish he’d had talked that way all the way through the election campaign. They were energised and moving, it reminded me why so many of us voted Labour in 1997.
Yesterday he listed many of the achievements of the Labour government and it is mostly good stuff.
I’m not pretending the Labour government has been fecking awesome or anything, yes in some respects they have lost their way (erosion of our civil liberties to name one important issue I have with Labour) but in comparison to the last Conservative government there’s no comparison, today’s Labour are 100x better. From what the current Tories have said on the national minimum wage and letting it “wither on the vine” by not increasing it like Labour has (Labour are talking about a living wage now) it tells us they are the same old Tories looking to turn Britain back to sweatshop Britain!
Has anyone noticed practically ZERO campaigning on the NHS beyond the Conservatives saying they won’t cut the front line services but will magically save money on efficiency savings? When the Tories lost power in 1997 it was all about the NHS because it was so run down by the Conservatives it was a national disgrace!
The NHS is an enormous institution and history tells us politicians do not run business particularly well (look at how our now privatised and far more efficient industries used to be run!). It’s taken massive investment into the NHS to get it where it is today and we all know money is wasted, BUT in comparison Labour cares about the NHS and the Tories don’t give a flying rats ass about this great British institution because they can afford to go private!
If you care about the NHS you will not vote Tory tomorrow!
I’ll be voting Labour because Labour at least have their heart in the right place and unlike the Tories heart it’s not two sizes too small.

I hope for your sake that if a member of you family is taken to hospital it has enough beds, because if not you may lose someone you love, be warned, its a lot of spin, not enough nurses, not enough beds, doctors who cant speak english, remember the old ladies stuck in cupboards because of labour cuts, that could be you sleeping with the brooms. i will never forgive brown as long as i live.

That’s not the NHS I know and love. That sounds more like the old Tory NHS that Labour have transformed over the past 13 years.
Come on Jamie you know the NHS has improved with Labour in government and to argue it’s worse now than 13 years ago, you can’t possibly be living on the same planet and reality the rest of us inhabit.
Remember I’ve also received lots of NHS treatment and so have personal experience as well and it’s been pleasantly better than I expected: my expectations were quite low because of what the Tories did to the NHS, but my treatment under Labours NHS has been a pleasant surprise. If you’ve had bad experiences, I’m sorry to hear that, but I believe most people who use the NHS think it’s brilliant.
If the NHS perfect?
No
Is the NHS better under Labour than under the Conservatives?
YES

David it is not 6 months ago that we saw pictures of old women put in broom cupboards, mixed wards, doctors prescribing wrong drugs, what happened to my mother was under the labour party, send home after having a pin inserted in her arm after a fall, sent home to die because of a shortage of beds she may of been alive under the tories. as you know i waited 6 weeks for my cancer results, i speak as I find, the staff are first class, they are fighting a losing battle, anyway David we will see, I am pleased the Pilgrim Hospital looked after you, i will miss you criticising me but its been fun, now i have to finish a film before its too late, no more exotic places.

Jamie if you waited 6 weeks for results for a suspected cancer in the last couple of years that must have been the exception rather than the rule. God help you if you’d needed those tests and that treatment under the last Tory government, as the NHS waiting lists then were sometimes YEARS long (no exaggeration).
If you care about the NHS and cancer waits then surely Labour’s policy of a 2 week cancer wait (1 week for results) should appeal to you; but instead you choose to vote Tory, a party that plan to do away with the 2 week wait cancer target altogether. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

Labour’s economic management during the banking crisis, credit crunch and recession is what has got us back into growth.
Have you not been watching the news lately?
Greece who had/has a rubbish government that was so bad at managing it’s economy it was in more debt as a % of GDP before the banking crisis than we are in debt now after a bad recession!
Note: when Tories say we have a higher level of debt than Greece, it’s total BS. The total value (the £ amount) is higher than Greece, but then the total debt of Germany will be higher than Greece. It’s not the total amount that’s important it’s the ability to afford the debt that matters and that’s a measure of the countries GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
Currently their debt relative to GDP is over 100%, ours is around 50%. Relatively speaking their debt is twice as bad as ours which is why they are in so much trouble. We even have less debt than Germany, we have a strong economy that is poised for decent growth in the future.
As an analogy if you earn £50K a year and I earn £100K a year, who can better afford a £50K loan? You will be close to bankruptcy because you can’t pay it off (you don’t earn enough a year), I’ll be fine and will get that debt down in under 5 years, because I earn more than enough to pay the debt down. That’s pretty much the economic reality of comparing Greece to us, so when the Tories say we have a higher level of debt than Greece it is BS and meant to distort the truth. What’s most irritating is it puts our country down and that’s going to hurt us on the world stage when we want to attract more foreign investment that generates jobs and more growth.
Greece are a country with idiots at the helm, not Britain, which is why we are back in growth and Greece are having riots in the streets and are still in deep recession!
It was Gordon Brown that led the world in working together to tackle the problems they all saw coming.
Gordon Brown brokered an agreement with all the major economies for each major economy to create a stimulus package that would stop the biggest damaging affects of what the banking crisis created.
The economic stimulus package in Britain wouldn’t have worked as it has without the entire world doing similar things because all countries rely on trading with one another (we might be on an island, but economically speaking we are not an island).
David Cameron’s Conservatives didn’t want the economic stimulus package, they wanted the recession to run it’s course, they didn’t want the Labour government to nationalise Northern Rock, they’d have let the country go into mass unemployment and let the banks go under and thousands of British savers like you and I would have lost our savings!
Small businesses would have closed in higher numbers than under the Tories 80s and 90s recessions. It’s a joke to call the Conservatives the party for business, in recent history they have been awful on economic matters!
There is a strong argument that with Gordon Brown as PM during the banking crisis, we wouldn’t have the world working together and there would have been a much deeper world recession! What is clear David Cameron if he was PM would not have led the world like Gordon Brown did.
Don’t you remember Gordon Brown’s slip when he said “We’ve saved the world” :-) after managing to get a world wide agreement to the economic stimulus packages?
Without those economic stimulus packages that all major economies agreed to and put in place, the world recession would have been far worse and that’s what the Conservatives wanted to do! Even now we aren’t out of the woods and the Tories at every step of the way have wanted to cut the stimulus package and throw the country into a deeper recession on ideological grounds of “sink or swim” or a “survival of the fittest” Tory mentality!
To believe the Labour government under Gordon Brown didn’t get us out of recession you haven’t a clue what you are talking about.
My God I think I just formed the “I LUV Gordon Brown” fan club :-)

David, just one more comment, Greece as idiots at the helm, as if we have not, smile David, it cant get any worse.
plz vote labour ppl
Assume this website’s election poll is a 100% representation of what people will vote country wide. Enter the percentages into the BBC’s seat calculator and ask yourself honestly. Is that right (in a so called democracy)?
The BBC election calculator is at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/election_2010/8609989.stm and if you put in the figures
Lab 21.2%, Con 25.6% and Lib 30.5% you get:
Labour Democrat MPs : 238
Conservative Democrat MPs : 214
Liberal Democrat MPs : 168
Admittedly it’s unlikely my poll is 100% accurate and the BBC seat calculator assumes the %s are country wide.
If it does come out something like this it would be a complete disaster for our first past the post voting system and I can’t see how it could continue unchanged.
It does show how poorly weighted the current system is, it really does favour the Labour vote and apparently SEVERELY disadvantages the Lib Dem vote. Could you imagine what would happen if the Lib Dems came first in the popular vote and last in the number of seats!!!
We will know in less than 48 hours :-)

Morally it is not right, democratically it is not right and it is not right for the future of the UK.
The only way to change this situation of MISDEMOCRACY is for everyone who is undecided or disillusioned to vote for the Liberal Democrats this time. They are untested – so TEST THEM. Give them the chance.

It would appear freedom of speech does not apply to this forum despite claims of non affiliation to any particular party. Stephs (if you are reading Steph) video (democratically anti Labour) and related comments have been deemed no longer web worthy…….at the same time the editor decides to back Labour….funny that. Hopefully a few people will read this before this to “disappears” too.

Get your facts straight, the videos (moved 2) was moved to the Political Videos page at https://general-election-2010.co.uk/political-videos/
I’m always moving comments around to more appropriate pages.
Now take a chill pill and calm down.

Thanks for the link…. My comment stands corrected.
I would just like to be able to vote!! I’m not in the UK at the moment but none of my families proxy voting cards(5) have been delivered to the required address – how many more has this happened to?
Yes thats right all you working class people vote Labour!
I’m really really worried about tomorrow, you see my father is retiring from the West Mercia Police in September and should get 120k pay out when he retires all thanks to Labour, we are worried that if the Tories get in then they will stop it. My father was going to give me 10k towards my wedding next year as well thats if he gets his 120k payout on retiring in sept.
The tories keep going on about cutting waste well thats my fathers retirement payout, he will still get his pension the same!

P.P.S Peeps don’t forget who banned fox hunting, that debate was going on for what seemed like ages, all the discussion, paperwork, costs involved. My other half had the United Pack up there last weekend asking if they could cut across his ground for the Fox Hunt, see it might be banned but they hunt all the same. Not exactly like there is any Police up there to notice and the Police don’t really care either, you go to an agricultural show this summer and meet the hounds for yourself. Fox Hunting is as alive as it ever was.
My other half doesn’t bother with that tho, only just finished lambing a week ago. 6 weeks ago had a game keeper up there and he shot 6 foxes in one night where as the United Pack only managed to kill 2 for the whole of last year, see it’s a sport more than anything, if you want to kill a fox you get a rifle.
But thankyou Labour for a bit of Law that as not made a damm bit of difference but fooled many in the cities into thinking fox hunting doesn’t go on anymore!

Steph, bad news I’m afraid, I won’t be voting labour. Am yes I am working class and as it stands at the moment won’t be getting anywhere near 120k when I retire. So sorry your father will be so poor, maybe he’ll have to come out of retirement and get a job cleaning offices for a few hours in each morning.

Claire a great comment, my pal has also just retired on £75,000 pension from the Police, there is no chance I will ever see that kind of money and I am sure I worked harder.
Yes thats right people vote Labour so as my father can get his 120k pay out when he retires, there is a Farmer down the road got a lot of land and he claimed a 700k subsidiary off the government for his land all thanks to the Labour government. The tories plan to put a limit on it, he will lose 400k if they get in, he was laughing all the way to the bank.
Keep him laughing all you working class people and vote for the Labour and don’t forget all these people in the banks that want there bonuses too, the Tories will cut all that as they class it as waste!
