For me the real significance of the Gordon Brown “gaffe” was not the severity of the comment, as it was not particularly severe, but what it revealed about his true views on the subject. In public he tells us that Labour are taking steps to control immigration, in private someone expressing even mild opposition to it is instantly dismissed as a bigot. The only interest that Mr Brown could now have in controlling immigration would be to try and placate the public to save a few votes. This could be seen in last nights TV debate when all three leaders were almost too keen to talk about the subject. Of course, as usual none of them had anything satisfactory to say about it.
