Local elections will take place on Thursday 5 May 2011 in 279 English local authorities. Elections will also be held on the same day to the Scottish Parliament, National Assembly for Wales and Northern Ireland Assembly. In Northern Ireland, elections to the existing 26 local councils are also due to be held on 5 May […]

I think the Lib Dems support will be smashed on May 5th and though it’s not historically and indicator of the next general election results I would not be shocked or saddened to see Lib Dem MPs loose their seats at the next general election.
I hope they gain less than 25 MPs. Scum bags betrayed students.
Liberal Democrats Chances Of Re Election?
Although I have great sympathy for the many hardworking lib dem councillors, I hope the lib dems as a party fall apart at the local elections. The party at Westminster has betrayed most of its pre-election supporters and thus deserves a good kicking. A disastrous local election will hopefully stir an in party revolt and help rid the backstabbing upper middle class M.P’s (Clegg, Teather etc) who said one thing pre general election but then did the opposite post election.
Lib Dems - Hopefully dead and buried
I wonder if the is the same as propportional representation that the Liberals wanted? I’m still unclear.
Unfortunately not Patricia, the two systems are quite different.
Wikipedia has good explanations of both AV and PR.

While I can see an advantage to proportional representation for the smaller parties ukip etc. the only advantage of av would be collecting all the second votes for one of the major parties when the minority party is removed . I for one will not be tricked into casting a vote (albeit 2nd) to bolster the votes of a party I dont want in power. This system manipulates the voting system to the advantage of the condems
Av system
Although I don’t particularly like the Alternative Vote system (I agree with Nick, a miserable little compromise) it’s at least better than First Past the Post voting system.
The vast majority of MPs in the country will be unaffected by AV assuming voting patterns remain the same, but if having this relatively small changes makes it feel like at least your vote counts for something it’s worth bothering to vote maybe turn out will go up.
How many of us live in a constituency where we know we could stay in bed the entire day and either the party we want in power will win or won’t win because it’s a safe seat, pointless voting, AV will make no difference in those areas (would need something like the Single Transferable Vote system to make every vote worthwhile). But at least with AV you have the potential to have your vote count AGAINST the party you least want in government if you live in a not so safe constituency.
I don’t want to vote for a party only for tactical reasons, but I do want the option to vote for who I really want to win knowing they don’t stand a chance AND have my vote count towards the least worst party.
Won’t make much difference where we live, Tories will win this seat unless there’s a massive shift to Labour. Possibility in the 2015 general election (assuming the coalition doesn’t disintegrate after the AV referendum and we have an early election) that Labour could get a massive swing if the country blame them for the economic problems we are about to face AGAIN!
BTW Am I the only person who prefers AV that’s seriously considered voting NO on May 5th just to spite Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems for breaking his election promise to not vote for increased tuition fees for students? Feels like rewarding the Lib Dems for their betrayal, but then I’m torn on that this is probably a once in a life time referendum on voting reform.

Alternative Vote Better than First Past the Post
the only time we the people get a democratic vote is when the MP and local councillors need us to vote them in. once they are in then you can forget anything democratic. We the people need to v have a referendum on the EU, on Hanging, on Immigration, on Law and Order, but the government and MPs once they are in decide what is best and never allow us to have a referendum on any of these issues WHY? What is the point in voting when the people dont really have a say, in what they want.
democracy?
The lib dems n the conservatives are behind the Alternative Vote because they know that they are the most hated political parties. With this voting system, they still have a chance of winning and breaking more promises like they did last year. The AV system will cost £25 million to create! With that money you can pay for more doctors, teachers etc. It is best to stick to the old voting system. The one who gets the highest votes should win shouldnt they???
AV is the worst!
what I get from this new AV is with the number of new parties springing up UKIP, BNP etc and people starting to vote for them, the vote is being spread wider and the old rule of 51% majority looks even more unlikely in the future, so they have come up with seizing the majority with alternatives.I know we never really lived in a democracy, but the system is one vote one person cant get any fairer than that…
one vote one person cant get any fairer than that
I deeply suspect that the real reason that the Lib’Dem’s are supporting AV is that, traditionaly, they would be the second choice of most Labour and Tory voters.
Therefore, where a Labour or Tory candidate wins the most votes, but still polls less than 50% the Lib’-Dem’s may hope to slip in on the second round of the count.
So I’m afraid I’m voting ‘NO’ tacticaly, as the last thing I want to see is corporal Clegg w2in ANY kind of victory after the way he has betrayed his party, his supporters, students, dis-affected Labour voters who thought that voting for the Lib’-Dem’s was a ‘safe’ protest vote, and anyone else I may have forgotten.
Why I'm Voting 'NO'
I have voted in every council and General Election since I was 21 I am now nearly 75.
My vote has never counted in over 50 years as my vote has never elected the persons I’ve voted for.
