Comment on Should the Government Ban the Islam4UK Wootton Bassett March Poll by David.

“More worrying, David is your comment “I’m not sure if the government can legally ban a march like this?”

You’ve taken my quote out of context, note the question mark, it was a question of how I think things work.

I don’t know much about what you can and can’t do in terms of marches, I know there are some silly rules governing protests outside parliament and I also know Labour have brought in some draconian measures under the guise of anti terrorism laws. But as I said above:

I’m not sure if the government can legally ban a march like this?

Can they?

Roger Philips in another comment mentioned the government banned an EDL march, so looks like they have some powers.

You have to remember although Islam4UK say they are going to march through Wootton Bassett, they haven’t set a date or applied for permission. So it would be premature for the government to ban something that’s not even arranged yet. It would also be inappropriate for the government in advance to say they would ban a march organised by Islam4UK, so they have to wait for it to be applied for etc…

If Islam4UK organise the Wootton Bassett march and the Government don’t ban it, then there’s something wrong with the system. At this stage it’s all talk from Islam4UK and appears to be nothing more than a publicity stunt that’s achieved what it set out to achieve!

As a website owner if I put a page up saying I was going to organise a march through Wootton Bassett to protest against the Afghanistan war would you expect the government to ban my march before I’d organised it?

Before any BNP supporters jump on this and misquote me, it’s HYPOTHETICAL, I have no plans to setup any marches anywhere :-)

BTW this page and poll is working on the assumption Islam4UK planned to actually organise the march and not just say they are going to organise a march.
