I totally agree with your discription of the ultimate breakdown of artificial constructed nation states, for example:
the disparate national/ethnic/religious groups that formed the Austro/Hungarian empire were forced together by conquest, that unhappy alliance caused great resentmant and eventually resulted in the assasination of Arch Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo and was the catalist that sparked WW1. After that war well meaning European politicians redrew the map of Europe, once again forcing ethnic groups who had nothing in common to live side by side causing resentment among german minority groups displaced from their homeland eventually causing the world to slip again into war in 1939.
Further afield this scenario was repeated in in India after independance causing the break away of Pakistan and subsequently even that country collapsed into violence with the civil war between Pakistan & Bangladesh.
Currently there are similar separatist conflicts between Chechnia and Russia, between armenia and azabajhan and Turkey and Kurdistan.
The historical lesson that we seem never to learn is that such empire building must be avoided at all costs because majorities ultimately abuse their powers and will discriminate against minorities (bullying)in order to benefit the needs of the majority(exploitation).
