LOL, it’s visitors not hits.
Visitors are unique, hits are not and 1 visitor can account from 1 to dozens or hundreds of hits. As a webmaster I only look at visitor numbers, like this site gained over 100,000 visitors on election day and it crashed the dedicated server the site runs on (couldn’t handle the traffic)!
Take a look at the sites Alexa ranking for this week https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/general-election-2010.co.uk
Alexa rankings are easy to manipulate, but not to this level. According to Alexa this site is in the top 20,000 sites on the Internet. No idea if it actually is in the two 20,000, but it is very popular.
