Nick Clegg talks about the LibDems as a ‘new’ force. They are actually the bulk of the Liberal Party that absorbed the SDP in 1988. (The SDP was a group of right-wing Labour members that left the Labour Party in 1981 led by the so-called ‘Gang of Four’). The Liberal Party in different guises has existed since the early 18th Century (Whigs) and had its high point in the late Victorian Age under W.E. Gladstone. The last Liberal Prime Minister was Lloyd George. The Tories (renamed the Conservatives in 1848) have an even longer history. The Labour Party is the newest kid on the block, being only 110 years old. We do need the new politics; we need a Labour Victory, and we may even need the LibDems to support Labour in a subsidiary role after the election. With the global economic situation as it is, and with the need to handle a huge deficit with skill and compassion, the alternative is too frightening to consider. We must ensure the Tories get nowhere near government, and thus I urge all LibDems of compassion and humanity to vote Labour on May 6th.
