Comment on Labour Policies : Labour Asylum and Immigration Policy by David.

“* In 2007, we removed an immigration offender on average, every 8 minutes.”

If that’s an accurate figure and it’s still the case, Labour will be removing over 100,000 illegal immigrants a year.

In March 2009 a study by the London School of Economics said the number of illegal immigrants in the UK lies somewhere between 524,000 and 947,000, with a “midpoint” figure of 725,000.

If accurate and no new illegal immigrants entered the UK it would therefore take the current government tactics about 7 years to remove them all. Realistically we’ll have more coming into the UK (how many a year?), so illegal immigration will always be a problem.

I wonder if an amnesty would be in order for SOME illegal immigrants?

Currently they don’t pay NI or taxes and so do not contribute to the services they use. There’s a good argument for bringing non-criminal illegal immigrants who can support themselves and their family into the tax system, since unless an illegal immigrant commits fraud they can’t claim benefits, so the majority must be working (I find it hard to believe they are ALL fiddling the system).
