Comment on Halting Immigration Would be Economic Suicide for the UK! by David.

UKIP’s moratorium on immigration policy is better than BNP’s halt on immigration policy. UKIP’s immigration policy is temporary, BNP’s immigration policy is permanent (BNP’s policy is not very good, so lets ignore it as a serious option).

The UKIP moratorium on immigration policy I can to some degree see some justification for, but 5 years is a long time, I could understand a year or two to get their policies into place. What’s the justification for the 5 year period, isn’t immigration a biggie for UKIP, implication being HIGH priority? Lets imagine UKIP won the next general election, why would it take an entire term in government to sort out immigration?

Immigration is not exactly rocket science, the UK needs permanent highly skilled workers (no one can seriously disagree with this) and right now we as a country are not supplying them, despite the current government pledge to have 50% of young people in education/training. IMO an admirable, but unrealistic goal considering the attitude of many of our young people, but still.

Conversely we don’t need more poorly trained workers entering the UK, there is no good reason for shipping in manual workers when we have millions unemployed!

Why are the long term unemployed not taking on those types of jobs?

There is no valid reason for the unemployed not to take a low paid job, I understand the benefits system enough to know even if an unemployed person took on a job below the UK’s minimum wage (speaking hypothetically) the benefits system will top up their earnings: working tax credits, child tax credits, housing and council tax benefits…

This results in the perception of the long term unemployed being work shy! Are they, I don’t know?

I appreciate EU rules makes it easier than it used to be for untrained workers to enter the UK to work as manual labor, but why are so many British born people not working when low paid jobs requiring little skill are available?

The only time I’ve not worked was when I physically couldn’t (or I was in full time education), I had to leave University in my final year because of health problems, after a couple of years of waiting for the ‘miracle cure’ I realised I was not going to finish my degree and follow my career of choice (research scientist).

I was incapable of working in a 9-5 capacity for an employer (no way I could work for someone, literally couldn’t sit in a chair or stand any period of time), so I started my own business and have never looked back. Appreciate that’s not for everyone, but I could have quite easily sat back on the equivalent of incapacity benefits and lived just as well for the first 2 years in business (my business really picked up after a couple of years). I used our benefits system to get me through the early stages of starting a business, now my business is doing well and I contribute back to society: most of my earnings come from the US, so I contribute quite a bit to the UK’s economy relatively speaking.

When our eldest son (home educated since birth) hit 16 years of age he planned to take two years off (to play computer games mostly!!) then study with the OU to get a degree! He had no intentions of getting a job (expected me to pay his way!) and had the opinion working in a place like McDonalds was beneath him (I was shocked at his attitude to low paid menial work to make ends meet)!

The excuses that boy made for not getting job, we live in a sea side town and he had the cheek to say there was no jobs for under 18 year olds, he actually believed only a handful of 16-18 years olds worked in our area (did the research it was around 10,000)!

Had we left him to his own devices, God knows what he’d be doing now (probably playing games online all day and if you fall into that sort of pattern, not easy to get out!). Two years on he’s studied early with the OU (supposed to only study with the OU when 18+ yrs old), worked in Argos part time for about 18 months and used his OU credits to get into University to study a computer sciences degree. Just got his first job since going to University working part-time in a bar (minimum wage) to help pay his way through University: even though we could pay his way through University, I think it’s more important he takes on the responsibility himself, so we aren’t paying a penny towards his further education.

It’s a concern many of our young people have the same attitude to work as my son had, I’m sure it’s a contributing factor to low paid work going to poorly trained foreign workers, many of our young adults don’t want to work!
