Liam Fox is the new Secretary of State for Defence in David Cameron’s Conservative and Liberal Democrats coalition government.
Liam Fox has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Woodspring since 1992 and replaces Bob Ainsworth as Secretary of State for Defence.
Liam Fox was a GP in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, Somerset before his election to parliament, I guess medical school and being a GP is a prerequisite to controlling the British armed forces! I wonder if we’ll have an ex soldier as Secretary of State for Health?
Looking at the appointments, almost all of them are disappointments.
What a total stitch-up!
Liam some time ago you mentioned the 25000 people employed and based in Germany, Surely this is an area that should be lookad at for savings. I dont think that we any longer have a requirement for a military presence in Europe. . NICK WHITE ARGYLL AND BUTE CCA
Liam some time ago you stated that we have 25000 defence jobs tied up in Germany. I dont think that we need to be there any longer our military priorities are elsewhere and think of the cost savings in this time of austerity. I would suggest that these people are brought home now. Nicholas,
It’s a great idea to bring soldiers back from Germany – but there is no infrastructure in the UK to house them.
The current plans to remove the Armed Forces from Germany by 2015 are only going to add to the burden on already crammed quarters and barrack accomodation.
In order to make the long-term saving there is a requirement for short term investment….which there is no money for. The soldiers are only going to have their lives made more miserable than they already are – while the government talks of reinstating the Military Covenant it is killing off Defence with a death of 1,000 cuts.
And as a footnote, the soldiers in Germany deploy on operations just as regularly as the soldiers in UK. It’s not like (as Liam Fox implies) the troops there are sat around waiting for the non-existant threat of Russian invasion.
I believe I’m right in saying that the 1 (UK) Div soldiers in fact undertake more deployments than those here in UK.
