The sun was shining and the song birds where singing in the rose garden of number 10 Downing Street when the newly weds David Cameron and Nick Clegg made their first Prime Ministerial press conference.
David Cameron took the lead on the majority of questions with both Nick Clegg and Cameron falling over themselves in agreement.
They didn’t really say a lot in policy terms, but the way it was said spoke volumes for how the coalition might work. David Cameron obviously taking the lead and Nick Clegg as backup singer.
As a Labour voter I secretly hope the coalition doesn’t work out beyond a few years, but as a British citizen, husband, father and business owner I pray it does and they can keep the British economy on the track of recovery Gordon Brown set it on after the banking crisis/credit crunch and world recession while not damaging the public services Labour have fought so hard to improve.
It’s a new era – not just two new parties but a new generation in power. Both Cameron and Clegg are members of Generation Jones (born between the Baby-Boomers and GenX). This matters because GenJones are typically pragmatists and only pragmatists can make a coalition work. This article has some interesting analysis of what this new GenJones leadership means: https://www.politicshome.com:443/
