Whatever happened to that fair and tolerant England I was brought up to respect?

Britain has been mixed race for thousands of years and has been a haven for Huguenots in the 18th century, Jews in the 19th and 20th century and countless refugees from communism and fascism since then.
Almost without exception, these people have come with talents and given us industry and taxes.
In exchange for safety they give us the best years of their working lives.
Not a bad deal, surely?
