From the Labour party manifesto they have a policy to bring in ID cards: The new biometric ID scheme which already covers foreign nationals will be offered to an increasing number of British citizens, but will not be compulsory for them. It will help fight the growing threat of identity theft and fraud, as well […]

ID cards themselves are no big deal. It is the database behind the UK card that sends shivers down everyone’s spine, because it will record when and where the card is used. Usage records cannot be deleted and are open to inspection by snoopers from the police, spies, HMRC etc. The cardholder must keep their records updated for the rest of their life, with draconian penalties if they don’t.
Finally the (enormously expensive) system that is being developed for the UK ID card is unlikely to work as the Home Office think (it will not be totally reliable). It offers few of the benefits of a properly thought out system. Such benefits would include the ability to verify your ID online, which the UK system cannot do. The UK ID card has shiny contacts on it to make it look like a “chip and pin” card. They are for show. The ID card chip uses (inherently unsafe) RFID technology.

Hi!
Why on Earth the only country in the world is Uk who do not have IDs Card,if you have nothing to hide why are you so afraid of that anyway you and I are already in so many database and nobody ask you if consent to that an believe me it’s worse than a ID card of course a lot of people do not want ID’s Cards because they want to continue their fraud it is not may be you situation and you can be sure the money for the ID’s cards will be very quickly back because it will be more difficult to do fraud any have thought about the waste of money with proof of Identity, bills , address proof , Bank statements some times for six monthe this is privacy and every one just give it when asked but again not the ID’s Cards

And what if the govt. has a “whoopsie-daisy” and loses this data? There’s already been so much data misplaced, that’s worrying for a start. And what’s more worrying is this data is much more detailed than the data that has already been lost.
These are ‘interesting times’. The spread of CCTV, which nobody voted for, the arming of the police, the creation of the ostensibly friendly ‘community police’ and attempts to establish a network of citizen snoopers/informants; and not least the many efforts to introduce ID cards, which police officers would no doubt insist on seeing any time they feel pushy. We are heading for dark days, and vigilance has never been more important.

Against. The cost (both monetary and in terms of liberty) simply isn’t work it, and the money is better spent elsewhere (eg. greater, more involved community policing or stronger border policing).
too much money will be wasted again . i will not support this idea.
ID cards are supposedly a way to prove you are who you say you are, but of course they can only do that if you prove your identity in the first place
ID cards do not stop illegal immigration, as proven in other countries.
ID cards are just another idea of this authoritarian government to control us, along with such ideas as the smoking ban, anti-drinking and “junk food” campaigns, replacing hereditary peers with Labour loyalists so they can pass any laws they want, locking us into a undemocratic European superstate without asking us, taking all our money via increasing/introducing taxes etc etc etc

Hi!
Yes about immigration but and do you think that fraud is only the immigrants? surely not and an ID Card is the best way to try to stop benefit frauds because now how many people can say I am Mr A later on I am Mr B.
I love the idea of compulsory ID cards. Lets have five years of this & arm the police too. Anyone found on the streets after a cut off date & without a card should be liable to summary execution. Thus saving the tax payer the vast cost of lengthy court battles & or hundreds of thousands of air fares to return for the no longer welcome.
Repeal the smoking ban, the less pensions we need to pay the better.
Means test child benefit.
The main problem here is Heathrow will be horrendously busy for a few weeks prior to my earlier mentioned cut off date.
A small price to pay

I think Its a good idea !
Keeping this sort of record will mean police can keep an eye on people with records of constant Anti-social behaviour and might even prevent crimes !
I like the idea that this will also prove who you are.. Bad luck for criminals !
Arm the police !
and Bring back proper school discapline !

here is why all digital security measures and CCTV in the uk is a VERY sinister thing, they actually allow terrorism instead of stopping it
