David, you ask why would an employer hire Polish workers in preference to British workers, the main reason is Money!
A friend of mine who runs a small building company explained to me why he was losing out to E. European workers:- He employed various workers paying union approved rates of pay, full N. insurance , holidays etc and quoted prices for contracts based on that!
His Competition Quoted for the same contracts using imported labour, paying these workers in their home countries, thus avoiding paying even our minimum wage, never mind union approved rates which are far higher than the minimum wage, these same workers would be housed in appaling conditions whilst the job was carried out & shipped home after the job was finished, no holiday pay, no N. insurance payments and probably no payment of British taxes, which meant the cost of labour for these jobs was sometimes as little as 25% of British costs.
Look at the way most major British companies have outsourced their call centers to India, where often graduates are working in them for a fraction of the pay a British worker would expect! Look at the worlds shipping, 90+ % of it is under “Flags of convenience, where safety standards are below par, navigational skills of the officers are doubtful & crews are paid peanuts! Many multi nationals have moved their manufacturing bases to third world or E. European countries to save money Need I say more?
