First Past the Post (FPTP) has been our primary voting system, it’s simple and straight forward it does it’s job but for some not good enough. They want the new and Australian system called Alternative Vote (AV).
But what is the Alternative Vote?;
Well… currently we strike an “X” next to whoever we want to be in power, but what might be brought in is the system of which you mark down in the candidates by preference.
Alternative Vote is considered to be more democratic and fair, because if one party doesn’t get a majority on first preferences then the second-preference votes of the candidate who finished last on the first count are redistributed. This process is repeated until someone gets over 50 per cent.
On May 2011 there will be a vote on weather the country should steer down road of electoral reform or drudge along the current path we are travelling at the moment. Whatever choice is picked, the views from the public and politicians is the same.
These are the two sides to the debate there is the general Tory supporter view of stay with what we have right now.
And there’s the general Liberal Democrat view of changing to the Alternative Vote.
